How do you illustrate the Queen of Country
in a way that hasn’t been done before?

And that was our very first on-screen assignment in design school: illustrate Dolly Parton and combine that illustration with one of her quotes into a fresh and relevant poster.

A fun, but nerve-wracking first assignment, to be sure.

A successful portrait is no easy ask.

I have to credit my roommate, Riley, with helping me conceptualize this task. I asked her, “What cartoon character style would you most like to see Dolly Parton illustrated as?” and she said, “Peanuts!” The concept went into my presentation of design directions and was chosen as the winner (little did I know that my design instructor is a huge Peanuts fan. Win-win ;) Along the way a very 70’s brown and orange color palette, floral motif, and a friendly little bird whom I named “Haystack,” were added to round out the design.

Additionally, the poster design had to somehow translate into a t-shirt design. I pulled the “rainbow” element out and manipulated it into Dolly’s initials that can stand on their own or incorporate more of the illustrated design.
